What is XAVC?
XAVC is a recording format that was introduced by Sony on October 30, 2012. XAVC is an open format that will be licensed to companies that want to make XAVC products. XAVC uses level 5.2 of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC which is the highest level supported by that video standard. The new codec is geared toward 4k production but can still be found useful for 2k production.
On the 30th of October last year, Sony announced new cameras that record using the XAVC format, PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Every editor across the world groaned as the thought of another proprietary codec wasn't exactly the best news for them.
The Sony PMW-F55 CineAlta 4K Digital Cinema Camera features an 8.9MP Super 35mm image sensor, capable of capturing 4K, 2K and HD resolution video in a variety of formats via the camera's internal recorder.
